Creating Generic Links

Step-by-step guide to creating landing pages for lead capture with Generic Links.

Overview

Creating a Generic Link generates a landing page where visitors enter their email to access your lead magnet. This guide walks you through the process.

Prerequisites

  • Pro or Team plan
  • At least one lead magnet created

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open Your Lead Magnet

  1. Go to Lead Magnets in the sidebar
  2. Click on the lead magnet you want to create a landing page for
  3. Make sure it's set to Active
  1. Look for the Generic Links section (or tab)
  2. Click Create Generic Link
  3. The creation dialog opens

Step 3: Configure Settings

Fill in the landing page settings:

Required:

  • Link is created automatically

Optional:

  • Custom slug: Choose a memorable URL path
  • Collect name: Whether to ask for visitor's name
  • Custom title: Override the lead magnet name on the page
  • Custom description: Add context for the landing page

Step 4: Save and Share

  1. Click Create
  2. Your Generic Link is created
  3. Copy the landing page URL
  4. Share it anywhere!

Landing Page URL

Your landing page URL will look like:

https://vavolta.com/g/abc123

Or with custom subdomain:

https://docs.yourcompany.com/g/abc123

Configuration Options

Collect Name

SettingForm Shows
OnName + Email fields
OffEmail field only

When to collect name:

  • Want personalized follow-up
  • Need it for your CRM
  • Creating a more qualified lead

When to skip name:

  • Lower friction = more conversions
  • Email is all you need
  • Quick/casual content

Custom Slug

Instead of random characters, use a memorable path:

Default: /g/x7f9k2
Custom: /g/marketing-guide-2024

Keep slugs short, lowercase, and hyphenated. Avoid special characters.

Custom Title

Override the lead magnet name on the landing page:

  • Lead magnet name: "Q4 Sales Report v3 FINAL"
  • Landing page title: "The Complete Sales Report for Q4"

Custom Description

Add context for visitors:

"Download our comprehensive guide to see how
top companies are increasing their ROI by 300%."

This shows below the title on the landing page.

You can create multiple Generic Links for the same lead magnet:

Use case: Different campaigns

Generic Link 1: /g/guide-linkedin (for LinkedIn posts)
Generic Link 2: /g/guide-website (for your website)
Generic Link 3: /g/guide-ads (for paid campaigns)

Each link tracks submissions separately, so you can measure which channel performs best.

After Creation

Test Your Page

  1. Open the landing page URL in a new browser/incognito
  2. Submit a test email (use yours or a test address)
  3. Verify you get access to the content
  4. Check the submission appears in your dashboard

Where to share:

  • Social media profiles and posts
  • Email signatures
  • Website buttons and CTAs
  • Ad campaigns
  • QR codes
  • Partner sites

From the lead magnet page, see all Generic Links with:

  • URL/slug
  • Creation date
  • Submission count
  1. Click on the Generic Link
  2. Click Edit
  3. Update settings
  4. Save changes
  1. Click on the Generic Link
  2. Click Delete
  3. Confirm

Deleting a Generic Link breaks the URL immediately. Anyone with that link will see an error.
